If you have EVER needed any confirmation that your engagement photos can look however the hell you want them to, let this session be it – because Christy and Austin truly brought their unique vision to life, and the results are an absolute dream come true. Combining a cake smash inside of a sultry bar in Pioneer Square, a hazy picnic in the park, and retro-inspired wedding attire has never looked so damn good! Get ready to fall head-over-heels in love with this sweet couple’s romantic engagement in downtown Seattle✨
Christy has become such a good friend of mine through our time working together, which made this session all the more fun with her and Austin! I actually just photographed their wedding, too, which was just as phenomenal as their downtown Seattle engagement – keep your eyes peeled for that one coming soon on the blog, too🤍You’ll see throughout this session that there was a very clear artistic vision for each portion of the shoot, each with a specific theme and impeccably-coordinated set of outfits. This is because Christy is an extremely talented writer, so together, our creative brains definitely wanted to play into the romanticism of it all – and I think our mission was quite successful, if I do say so myself!
The first stop for their downtown engagement was Dead Line Bar in Pioneer Square, where the vibes were planned as follows: sultry, sexy, retro, and romantic AF. And my goodnesssss did that vision come to life oh so beautifully! Christy showed up in the dreamiest bridal-inspired Selkie, boasting a pair of gorgeous puffed sleeves, delicate layers of organza, and an incredibly flattering skirt. I cannot recommend Selkie enough if you’re looking for a unique place to shop for a dress for any occasion – each dress is elegant, nostalgic, and uber-romantic. Check out the technicolor dress that Ruponthi wore for her intimate elopement for even more Selkie inspo! She even paired it with the most adorable white heels, cat-eye sunglasses, and a sheer bow covered in sparkling pearls incorporated into her hairdo✨
I’ll let you drool over the Selkie a little bit more on your own as I switch over to Austin, who absolutely showed up & showed off just as much as this stunning bride-to-be. You can truly never go wrong with sage green (especially in the Pacific Northwest!), and this shoot was no exception. Austin’s smooth, sage suit, white undershirt, and gold jewelry was simply shining in the light of my flash & the dim mood lighting in the bar – plus he was standing next to an absolute angel in her bright ivory dress & pearl-covered heels! These romantic cocktail bar engagement photos were EVERYTHING.
As if the cocktail-sippin’ and the corner booth-snugglin’ wasn’t enough, Christy came up with one last concept to throw into their already-romantic as hell shoot: a cake smash! Because why not keep your faces clean on your wedding day and incorporate a cake smash into your engagement instead? It was all her idea – they grabbed pieces of the rainbow-sprinkle-decorated vanilla cake, took a few aesthetic bites for the camera, and then idd a little bit of smashing in each other’s faces, of course. I am beyond obsessed with this idea and how the photos turned out!!
After snapping a billion and one sultry shots of these two loving on each other under the dim lights of the bar, we transitioned out into the sunshine for a hazy picnic under the sun in Volunteer Park, and the romance was somehow leveled up times 100. Volunteer Park never fails to be a beautiful location for downtown Seattle engagement photos if you’re looking for a bit of lush greenery, but when you add a couple of creative minds, a crazy-in-love couple, and the dreamiest picnic setup you’ve ever seen, it becomes simply spectacular. Christy and Austin found a spot on the grass and set up an adorable summertime picnic featuring a bottle of champagne, bright red strawberries, vibrant florals, a little lantern, a few books, and even a board game! I swear these two were made for Pinterest boards – just look at how precious they were, cuddling under the setting sun, toasting glasses of celebratory champagne, and smoking a couple of joints! I had to hold myself back from keeping them there for hours on end 😉
What a dream it was to not only shoot one of the most romantic, artistic engagement shoots ever, but more importantly, to shoot with such an incredible couple – who have now turned into friends. Christy and Austin’s romantic cake smash + summertime picnic engagement in downtown Seattle will forever be a favorite!
I could go on and on about how amazing my couples are, but let me just show you instead – here’s more of my favorite Seattle engagement inspo to help you plan your own unique session!
